Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: A March 2025 Rotary Focus

Glenn Pfaff

March is an important month for Rotary International as we focus on one of the fundamental pillars of health and well-being—Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). Access to clean water and proper sanitation is essential for human dignity, disease prevention, and sustainable development. Through our projects and advocacy, Rotary clubs worldwide are making a significant impact in ensuring that communities gain access to these vital resources.

The Importance of WASH

According to the World Health Organization, millions of people still lack access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and hygiene education. The absence of these basic needs contributes to the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery, disproportionately affecting children and vulnerable populations.

When communities have access to clean water and sanitation, they experience reduced health risks, improved school attendance, and enhanced economic opportunities. Women and children, who often bear the burden of collecting water in many parts of the world, benefit significantly from time saved and improved safety.

Rotary’s Impact on WASH

Rotary International has long been a leader in WASH initiatives. From building wells and latrines to providing hygiene education, Rotary clubs around the globe work tirelessly to address water scarcity and sanitation challenges. Projects often include:

  • Installing clean water systems in underserved communities

  • Developing sustainable sanitation solutions

  • Providing hygiene training to promote health and disease prevention

  • Partnering with local governments and organizations to improve infrastructure

One of the most impactful initiatives is Rotary’s WASH in Schools program, which focuses on ensuring students have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. This leads to better educational outcomes, as students can attend school without the interruptions caused by waterborne illnesses.

How CMIRC Supports WASH

In March, Rotary Clubs globally are actively dedicated to promoting and addressing issues concerning water, sanitation, and hygiene, recognizing them as fundamental human rights. Our focus extends beyond merely constructing wells; we integrate these initiatives into educational projects, aiming to empower individuals, especially children, with knowledge about disease transmission and good hygiene practices. This approach not only fosters healthier lives but also reduces school absenteeism and positively impacts families.

The Chiang Mai International Rotary Club's Water and Sanitation Thailand Global Grant Project aligns perfectly with Rotary International’s mission and our club’s goal of Improving Child Safety, Health, and Education in Northern Thailand. Alongside our partner organization, The Integrated Tribal Development Foundation (ITDF), we emphasize the transformative power of water.

The Rotary Club of Fig Garden, Fresno, California, approached CMIRC to be the local partner on a Global Grant, "Thailand Water and Sanitation Project GG-2233068." Together with District 5230 clubs, Rotary Foundation Global Funding, the Lanna Foundation, and ITDF, this proposed project is helping bring clean water and sanitation to the hill tribes of Northern Thailand.

Our Rotary International Foundation Global Grant, totaling $330,000 over three years (2023-2025), facilitates the provision of clean water and sanitation facilities, including toilets and showers, to 21 hill tribe villages lacking reliable clean water sources. Progress is evident as we have already completed work in six villages and are actively engaged in the seventh, adhering to our schedule.

We are pleased to share that Rotary Clubs worldwide are becoming aware of our endeavors, with the Rotary Club of Emerald City in Washington State generously funding a 22nd village. We invite other clubs and donors to join us in our mission towards "a healthier and more successful future for all."

Moving Forward

Rotary’s commitment to WASH aligns with global efforts such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. By working together, we can create a world where everyone has access to safe water and adequate sanitation, ultimately improving health, education, and economic stability.

Join us this month as we reaffirm our commitment to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. Together, we can continue to bring life-changing solutions to those in need and build healthier communities for the future.
