Imagine a baby with serious jaundice in a rural hospital whose only hope is to get to a larger hospital in an incubator. The Rotary Club of Charoen is giving a mobile incubator to Mae Tuen hospital with support from the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club.
The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation report that preterm deaths among babies in Asean are as high as 72%, and each year, there are around 100,000 premature babies born in Thailand. These numbers may be higher in rural areas.
Incubator units are crucial to saving preterm babies, especially in case the main hospital does not have room for the baby and it needs to be sent some distance.
Babies may need an incubator for a number of reasons, including:
Premature birth
Premature babies may need more time to develop their lungs and other organs. They may also not have enough fat under their skin to keep themselves warm.
Illness
Babies who are sick may need an incubator to help them stay warm and reduce the risk of infection.
Other conditions
Babies may need an incubator if they have respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), hypoglycemia, sepsis, or other infections
