After a hiatus, our Bulletin and website are back on track, and our active, vibrant club is ready to move forward. I have recently accepted the position of President for the rest of this Rotary Year. My name is Owen Hodgson, and I lived within 100 km of Sydney, Australia. In 2020, I came to Thailand to spend some time at Nikki’s Place (Agape Home) and became a Covid refugee. I have retired here and Chiang Mai is now my home.
I am divorced with 3 children and 3 grandchildren, who all live near Brisbane, Australia.
In Australia, I worked for the New South Wales State and Local Government as a road designer, traffic engineer, town planner, and contract engineer for over 40 years. In recognition of my voluntary work with children and youth, I was honoured to be chosen as a Torch Bearer for the Sydney Olympic Games.
I was a member of Woonona Lions Club for over 10 years holding the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Membership Chairperson and Board Member for 8 years. The projects we undertook were aimed to improve the safety, health and education of local children.
In Thailand I became a teacher as I could speak a dialect of English and had approval to work with children. I wanted to continue my community service/volunteering work in Chiang Mai, and see my involvement in CMIRC as a great way to do that.
I also hold the title of Scottish Laird (Lord) and have forebears linking back to the early Kings of England (the House of Plantagenet).
Enough about me, read on for information on what we are doing in Northern Thailand.
As I write this Chiang Mai has joined a number of other areas in Thailand recovering from a record period of flood. I hope that as a club or individuals we can assist in the cleanup that will be needed soon.
