Chiang Mai International Rotary Club (CMIRC) - Kru Payu Children’s Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program (CWSDPP)
Our Children’s Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program is underway again this year after a one-year COVID-19 disruption!
We have already completed five classes at our Chiang Mai Tessaban School program and five classes at our Phrao School program. Things are going remarkably smoothly given the long hiatus. During 2022-2023, we will teach all 4th-graders at the eleven Tessaban (municipal) schools in Chiang Mai and all 4th-graders at the eleven poor schools in Phrao where we have been teaching under the local leadership of the Phrao-based Warm Heart Foundation. AND, we have obtained the funds for Chiang Mai and Phrao to teach the now 5th-graders who could not take our classes as 4th-graders last year due to school closures.
So, we continue our 8-year streak in Chiang Mai and our 4-year streak in Phrao of teaching nearly every 4th-grade child in public school survival swimming and water safety. We will also continue our Wat Suan Dok School 4th-grade program this year with the help of the Rotary Club Chiang Mai Wattana. By year end we will have taught a total of more than 3,000 children here in Chiang Mai Province over the past eight years. We can now say that almost every Tessaban school graduate in Chiang Mai will have had our survival swim and water safety course!
And that’s not all, we have learned that our program at the Banya Migrant Learning Centre in Phuket Province has completed their program for 55 migrant children there. Thanks to our sponsor Bob Ashley for his support of this program and thanks to the Rotary Club of Patong Beach for being our local partner there!
Finally, we’d like to take this opportunity to recognize the generous support of our partners, sponsors and donors, so here is a list of these generous organizations, below. We'd especially like to recognize a new donor, the HuaQiao Foundation of Hong Kong! Special thanks also to individual donors Richard Murray and an anonymous donor, and for the continued support from Ian Bushell. If you wish to help, please contact Project Champion John Schorr at watersafety@cmirotary.org for more information.
